Percussion Studies
I began studying percussion in 5th grade and it has been a major area of my life ever since. Throughout high school and my undergraduate career, I developed an affinity for jazz drum set, though I enjoy all areas of percussion. I played big band music and bebop frequently, but my main interest was in the avant-garde music of John Zorn, Bill Frisell, and other New York downtowners, which led to my next area of interest. During my junior year I became exposed to the radical modernist music of Xenakis, Feldman, Stockhausen, Bartok, and others as well as the philosophical/musical work of John Cage. During my senior year, I studied these composers in detail and began to move toward 20th and 21st century music.

During my graduate work at Wichita State University I actively pursued this interest in “new” music with highlights including two performances and workshops with George Crumb and the performance of Bartok’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with WSU faculty. During this time I was involved in WSU’s inchoate student new music ensemble, the Zeitgeist Consort.

Around the time of my senior year, I began to study and compose electronic music. After receiving my M.M., I decided to shift my focus entirely to electronic music, which I am currently studying at WSU. Though I don’t have as many chances to play currently, percussion was and always will be a big part of who I am as a musician/composer and I continue to use lessons learned behind the drum set everyday.
