I’ve been putting my computer-based DAW together for about three years now. The Linux machine is mostly to run programs like Super_Collider and CSound, which I am still inexperienced with at this point. I also use it a lot for Pd video as both OSX and Windows XP aren’t great with the PDP and GEM externals.

I don’t have a lot of audio hardware in my setup. I prefer to keep everything on the computer. I rarely need to record an acoustic instrument, so I get along with the MBox. Frankly, it’s more like an oversized USB hardware key than anything - Digidesign’s copy protection. Since my music is 100% synthetic, I get along without a quality interface. I’ve tried working with acoustic instruments, but it’s not my style.

My space isn’t ideal as it is hard to get a balanced sound and decent imaging out of the Alesis monitors in their current positions. I’ve tuned the ports, which has helped tame their rather pronounced low end. Besides the limited space, my apartment neighbors don’t appreciate the “noise”, so I end up doing most of my work with headphones.
