Introduction to the wiki
What is a wiki?
- collaborative web page which an entire community can contribute to
- a continually developing resource of information
- an easy way for an individual or a community to have web space
Examples of wikis
most famous: the wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anybody can contribute to
ubuntu wiki is a wiki about the distribution of Linux called ubuntu
a wiki on installing Linux on IBM Thinkpads here
Spring '06 Technology Art and Sound by Design course wiki was created and used by the students and faculty of this course
Wikis come in flavors
we have chosen MoinMoin, but there are many others
Stuff you gotta know
Note the address of our wiki: cratel.wichita.edu/crate (Capitalization does matter in wikis) (you may want to bookmark this address by hitting "Ctl+D" now.)
- Also notice that any pages within our wiki begin with the above address, then a new name for the specific page... that's why it's important to name your pages something sensible, we can all do searches for logical words and hopefully get what we're looking for. The search bar is to the left and searches our wiki only.
Wiki TEXT and the GUI mode editing
- Text and GUI editing are both available at the bottom of the page:
- Text Edit uses code
- GUI Edit looks more like common word processors and is preferable by many new users.
- The GUI Edit mode may have some bugs
The GUI Edit mode does not work with Apple's Safari web browser.
How do you edit a wiki
sometimes optional in general (but not optional for CRATEL's wiki): create an account
