Intro to Audio and Video Synthesis
An Independent Study Course with Matthew Long
August 22
went over John's Pd tutorial parts I and II
- project: make a cross fader which fades between a phasor and a cosine wave
August 29
- reviewed material from last week
- project: alter phasor~ in crossfader project so phasor~ itself goes from -1 to 1 in amplitude
- finish wiki homepage
go through Part III of the tutorial
September 5
went over project to make phasor~ go from -1 to 1
- added objects to create frequency relationship between the two wave generators
- assignments:
- add more random and metro objects to PDPatch to randomize the frequency relationship between cosine and phasor
- add slider to change the range of random master frequency
- what other random and metro objects can you add?
- where can you add a line or line~ object?
- upload all work to the wiki
September 12
Matt couldn't make class
September 19
explored/revisited |line~|, |metro|, etc. Introduced |stop(
assignment: make the scrubber in Part_IV:_Sampled_Sounds_and_Scrubbing
September 25
- Mic recording revisited
- Basic enveloping
ADSR envelopes ADSR_Directions
October 3
- Find a recording of electronic music
- Listen and write a one-page critical response - the response should not be descriptive. It should be your personal opinion and interpretation of the work.
- ADSR again
- Make something with additive and subtractive synthesis and an ADSR envelope
October 24
FM synth, attach keyboard to computer and get midi in from Pd
Assignment:
- hook up music keyboard to computer and get Pd to recognize it (use 'test audio and midi' in Pd menu)
- add third operator which manipulates the freq of the modulator.
- Play with the mathematical relationships between the operators to create a new and unique sound
- record the sound in Pd
- upload the resulting sound and the Pd patch that created it by midnight Tues/Wed
October 31
- startup flags on Pd
-midiindev <number>
- making an audio file in Pd
- saving your settings
- radio box
- experimenting with fm
- table and saving presets
Assignment:
- come up with more presents
- read about wavetable synthesis and see if you can come up with a simple example
November 7
- Wave table values (0-1)
- Polyphonic midi
- Multiple wave table synthesis
- Vector Synthesis
Assignment:
- Build a wave stacking patch
- Experiment with a vector patch
- Read 159-163 in CMT
Steve's PolySynth.zip Polyphonic Synth
November 20
conversation only --- brainstorming about the course
- more manipulation using real-world sounds live and recorded
- meet 2x/week for 30 minutes each time?
- integrate Pd with Acid Xpress?
- explore patterns, loops, sequencing in Pd
install Midi-Yoke
- start collecting sounds you think are interesting in Pd and
- figure out what need to trigger the sound
- save some interesting Pd sounds as wave files?
check out buzz for fun
check out cecilia for fun
- final project will be 3-5 piece which can be loop-based, using Acid/Sony music studio triggering sounds in Pd as well as using built-in sounds
- install Audacity (beta version) and optional downloads (LADSPA, VST, LAME, Plugins)
