The Cyclometrics project is designed to provide a cyclist their instantaneous power output on top of the traditional speed, distance, and time.  This is accomplished by introducing a strain gauge into the bicycle transmission system.  The tension in the chain can be resolved by biasing the chain out of its normal equilibrium with an idler.  By measuring the force exerted on this idler by the chain, we are able to determine the tension in the chain.  This calculated tension can be used in a variety of formulas to find the work and instantaneous power output of the cyclist.  All of the information gathered can be transmitted to an external display unit mounted onto the bicycle’s handlebars.
